artist statement

As a visual poet, I am fascinated with words and images. The richness of language adds depth to our ability to communicate. I am continually intrigued by how twenty-six letters in our English alphabet can be configured in countless ways to give us such powerful and subtle nuances for connection and meaning.

Together with language, I am an observer of people; constantly wondering and searching beyond the constructed masks. When you give people your attention and time, the stories emerge. I love the moments of courage and strength where there are no fan-fares, no awards nor accolades, just ordinary people going about their lives in often, remarkable ways. Alongside this, are the complexities of humanity and the intriguing myriad of responses to the interdependence of social issues with the natural world.

My aim is to create work that has initial appeal and that with time and closer examination, reveals its power and creates ongoing discussion and hopefully, action. Fragments
of Consciousness
is one such example. This monoprint explores the ephemeral nature of fast fashion and its impact on the environment. The artwork portrays stakeholders trying to hold firm to wisps of paper carrying messages of sustainability and ethical practice. Other stakeholders discard them and they scar the land, lost amidst the rush for profit and gratification.

Ultimately, my art is a reflection of my deep-seated belief in the power of art to inspire change. I seek to illuminate through my visual poetry, the courage, resilience and vulnerability inherent in the human spirit. By inviting viewers to partake in a sojourn of exploration, I hope to spark conversation and encourage meaningful discussion that contributes to a more compassionate and informed society.
